SIU investigating after York police cruiser involved in Hwy. 407 collision

By News Staff

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a man was seriously injured when the York Regional Police (YRP) cruiser in which he was detained was rear-ended by another vehicle.

The SIU says a YRP officer was travelling westbound on Highway 407 around noon on Thursday when he pulled over another vehicle just west of Jane Street.

The officer parked the police cruiser on the shoulder of the highway and the driver of the other vehicle was asked to sit in the backseat.

Shortly after, a third vehicle crashed into the back of the cruiser.

The man detained in the cruiser was seriously injured and taken to hospital. The police officer and driver of the third vehicle sustained minor injuries and were also taken to hospital.

Westbound lanes of the 407 were closed but reopened about seven hours later.

The SIU is asking anyone with information or any video footage of the incident to contact them.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
