1 arrested, 2nd suspect sought in Greenwood and Gerrard shootout

A 25-year-old man has been arrested and police are on the hunt for a second suspect after a shootout near Greenwood Avenue and Gerrard Street East that left one man in critical condition last Friday.

Officers responded to a call for a shooting in the area around 2:20 a.m. on Jan. 4.

Police initially said a man was in his car at Glenside Avenue when he was shot in the head. At the time police said it was unclear if he was involved in the shooting or just sitting in his car.

Following an investigation, police said two vehicles, a grey Nissan Altima and a red Nissan Altima, were parked in the area, each with “a number of occupants” inside.

An unknown male suspect reportedly approached the vehicles on foot and began shooting at them.

The occupants in the vehicles began shooting back at the male suspect and followed him as he ran away.

The exchange of gunfire between the vehicles and the male on foot continued as he ran onto Walpole Avenue.

Police found bullet holes in at least four other cars in the area. One man said his roommate’s car had seven bullet holes in it.

During the shootout, a male victim in one of the vehicles was shot. He made his way to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said Steven Karapetrov, 25, of Toronto, was arrested and is facing multiple charges including conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Authorities have identified the second suspect as Benvolio Valenski, 27, of Ajax. Valenski is wanted on numerous charges including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm with intent, and conspiracy to commit murder. He is considered to be violent, armed and dangerous, and should not be approached.
