Man dies after being struck by dump truck in Lawrence Heights

By News Staff

A 40-year-old man is dead after being struck by a dump truck at Marlee and Lawrence avenues near Highway 401 and Allen Road on Wednesday afternoon.

Witness accounts from the scene say the man was crossing Lawrence Avenue from the north side to the south side at the cross-walk at around 1 p.m. when he was struck by a dump truck which was exiting off the Allen Expressway and heading west.

“Due to the size of the vehicle, the nature of the turning movements, it was initially ruled as a fail to remain but with the witness accounts and surveillance video from the local mall, it’s no longer a fail to remain,” said Sgt. Brett Moore of Traffic Services. “They’ve located what they believe to be the vehicle involved.”

Moore added that the driver is now cooperating with police. There is no indication at this time if charges will be laid.

Emergency crews performed CPR on the pedestrian, but he was pronounced dead in hospital.

It was one of several incidents involving pedestrians and cars in the GTA.

Approximately three kilometres south west of that scene, police were investigating after a man in his 70s suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle in the area of Dufferin Street and Eglinton Avenue East.

And in Brampton, police say a 12-year-old boy suffered minor injuries after he was struck in the area of Balmoral Drive and Dixie Road.
