The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a man fell to his death in St. Catharines.

Niagara regional police were called to the area just south of the city’s downtown around 6:15 a.m. Saturday.

The Special Investigations Unit says a man was sitting on the Burgoyne Bridge on St. Paul Street West, overlooking Highway 406.

The SIU says soon after officers arrived, the man went over the edge and landed on the highway below.

He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The SIU says it has assigned five investigators to the probe and a post-mortem is scheduled for Monday.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
