Fire extinguished in mechanical room at Ryerson

A blaze that started in a mechanical room at Ryerson University has been put out by fire crews.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at the Ryerson University Centre for Engineering and Computing on Church Street just after 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Firefighters arrived to a strong “electrical” smell and found heavy smoke in a stairwell. The source of the fire was found in a mechanical room.

It was extinguished quickily, but the building has been evacuated.

A security office was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, but no other injuries have been reported.
