2 people killed by trains on Lakeshore East GO line in seperate incidents

Two people have been killed after being struck by GO trains on the Lakeshore East line Monday.
The first incident occurred just before 10 a.m. at the Scarborough GO station. The victim suffered severe injuries and later died of their injuries.
Trains were delayed for close to two hours.
Just over an hour later, a second person was struck and killed by a train near the Eglinton GO station.
Service was suspended for several hours, but resumed just after 4 p.m. Delays and cancellations could still be expected.
Metrolinx spokesperson Scott Money told 680 NEWS it was a difficult day for Metrolinx staff.
“We are thinking about all the operators, people who drive the trains, and the first responders and transit safety officers who have to attend the scene.”
A blog post from Metrolinx released on Monday spoke about the aftereffects these incidents have on their crew members. They have created a Peer Support program and have provided access to support following a tragic effect.
Transit safety officers who are tasked with investigating fatalities and are often impacted.
Sgt. Michael Walton said, “Each situation has the potential to deeply impact our officers and this is due to numerous factors such as the age of the victim, witnesses and grieving family members on scene, individual triggers or stressors, and the pressure of getting service back up and running as soon as possible.”
The post also spoke about the devastating consequences these fatalities have and Metrolinx says they are working to reduce them across the more than 500 kilometres of open rail.
