Ottawa will not renew funding to aid group sending homeopaths to Honduras

By The Canadian Press

MONTREAL — The Canadian government has decided against renewing funding for a Quebec-based organization providing controversial homeopathic therapies in Honduras.

A spokesman for the minister of international development said today that homeopathic projects no longer fall within the priorities of the federal government’s international assistance policy.

Ottawa’s funding for Terre Sans Frontieres had been criticized by doctors and academics claiming homeopathic therapies are no better than placebos for treating patients.

Terre Sans Frontieres received about $200,000 for the homeopathy services in Honduras, beginning in 2015. A spokesman for International Development Minister Maryam Monsef said the program will end after the 2019-20 fiscal year.

Louis Belanger said the five-year funding package was signed by the previous Conservative government in early 2015, and the funds were guaranteed for that period.

Terre Sans Frontieres did not respond to requests for comment.
