SIU director Tony Loparco stepping down

Special Investigations Unit (SIU) director Tony Loparco is reportedly stepping down, just days after criticizing proposed changes to how the police watchdog operates.
An SIU spokesperson confirmed to the CityNews that Loparco’s appointment is expiring at the end of the month.
He’s been at the helm of the police watchdog for five-and-a-half years, the longest serving director in the unit’s history.
The SIU has been under fire from several groups, mainly for the slow pace of its investigations, and most recently by a highly-critical judicial review.
Last month, attorney general Caroline Mulroney unveiled a sweeping re-write of provincial policing laws, that would include a 120-day deadline on SIU investigations.
Last week, Loparco laid out a series of concerns about the changes in a letter to the standing committee on justice policy, writing many of the new rules are “simply unrealistic.”
Mulroney will have the final say on Loparco’s successor.
