Is the federal budget enough to distract from the SNC-Lavalin affair?

By Cormac Mac Sweeney

Finance Minister Bill Morneau is touting the 2019 budget as the next piece to the Trudeau government’s overall strategy to make life better for families and the middle class, highlighting the measures about pharmacare, skills training for jobs and home ownership.

But, as the federal government continues to try and douse the flames of the SNC-Lavalin affair, Maclean’s Ottawa Bureau Chief John Geddes says this may not be enough to change the channel.

“SNC-Lavalin, Wilson-Raybould still remains a major story on the hill and there is nothing dramatic enough in this budget to take away from that,” said Geddes.

Geddes believes this is more aimed a longer-term election strategy, noting items like pharmacare won’t kick into gear until after the vote.

Morneau also took shots at the opposition, stating they want cuts to balance the books, but claims that would just lead to more challenges for families.
