By News Staff

York police say a man found dead in a Whitchurch-Stouffville church parking lot Wednesday afternoon had been shot in East Gwillimbury.

The 22-year-old victim was found collapsed between two parked cars in the lot near Ninth Line and Aurora Road around 3 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the shooting happened in a parking lot at Queensville Side Road and Highway 48 in East Gwillimbury. A witness drove the victim about 16 kilometres to the church parking lot, police said in a release Thursday.

The victim has been identified as Alex Perlmutter of Sunderland, Ont.

Police say three suspects were seen fleeing the area in a black- or dark-coloured SUV.

Residents of the rural area, which is surrounded by trees and farm land, said they never expected to see a gang-style shooting like this in their neighbourhood – especially not in broad daylight.

“We moved here to get away from that,” Jim, who moved to the area from the GTA, told 680 NEWS, “We used to live in North York and we moved up here because it’s quieter.”

Police have released the following descriptions of the three suspects:

Suspect 1:

  • Male, black
  • Cornrows in hair
  • Wearing a camo sweater and track pants
  • Armed with a firearm

Suspect 2:

  • Male
  • Wearing blue shoes

Suspect 3:

  • Male
  • Wearing a large chain
