600 stunt driving charges laid this year in GTA alone: OPP

By News Staff

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are raising concerns about the alarming number of people endangering lives by driving at excessive speeds.

According to the OPP, about 600 stunt driving charges have been laid this year in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) alone.

“I can tell you just last night officers here in Port Credit …. took 10 drivers off the road for street racing,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told 680 NEWS.

Schmidt says 5700 street racing, 200,000 speeding charges were laid across the province in 2018, with 10,000 crashes deemed directly related to speeding on OPP-patrolled roads.

Officials say they’ll be on the lookout for excessive speeders for the upcoming Easter weekend, and they’ll also be promoting their seat belt safety campaign.
