Fire crews battle blaze at Niagara winery

By News Staff

Fire crews have put out a large fire at a popular winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

They were called just before 2 p.m. to the Colaneri Estate Winery where crews came across heavy black smoke.

Once on the scene, a rear storage building was found fully engulfed in flames. The main building on the winery was protected.

Deputy Fire Chief Nick Ruller said around 35 firefighters were on the scene and were able to get the fire under control within 30 minutes. There was never any threat to the vineyard.

“Our crews did a phenomenal job keeping the exterior fire from impinging on the quite complex and beautiful building. It’s very encouraging to see the building is essentially unaffected,” added Ruller.

An investigation into what caused the fire is still unknown, but Ruller said he does not anticipate the Ontario Fire Marshall will be attending.

Video from the area shows a large amount of black smoke filling the air.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
