Ford government launches anti-carbon tax ad campaign

By Richard Southern

The Ford government launched their first taxpayer-funded television commercials against the federal carbon tax on Monday.

The 15 and 30 seconds ad spots all bear the tagline “A carbon tax isn’t the only way to fight climate change,” and depict nickels pouring out of heating vents and gas pumps, symbolizing the added cost of gas and heat.

The commercials, which will air during prime time hours till June, claim “Ontario has a better way” to hold the biggest polluters accountable, reduce trash and keep the lakes clean.

It’s not clear what these specific ads cost, but the Ford government has set aside 30 million in taxpayer dollars to fight the federal carbon tax.

Ontario Minister of the Environment Rod Phillips says the federal government is also spending taxpayer money to promote the carbon tax.

“The federal government is spending millions of dollars to promote their idea – which is that they are going to tax people and then they are going to give some of them more money back,” he told 680 NEWS.

Provincial Green Party leader Mike Schreiner counters that the anti-carbon tax ads do not show the full picture.

“They don’t tell the other third of the story which is the amount of rebate you’re getting back from your taxes,” he says.
