Area of downtown evacuated over suspicious object found in toilet

By News Staff

Toronto police evacuated the area around Bay and Wellington Streets on Tuesday afternoon after a suspicious object was found in a toilet.

Officers were called to reports of an “oddly shaped/suspicious object” in the toilet of a public men’s washroom in a Bay Street office complex. Elevators in the building were stopped and the location was secured.

The CBRNE team is on the scene to investigate and the package was detonated as a precaution.

Const. Allyson Douglas-Cooke says the item was a bottle shaped like a grenade stuck in the bottom of a toilet bowl.

She added police could not safely remove the bottle, so decided to detonate it, destroying the toilet in the process.

The investigation is still ongoing and it’s not clear if this was deliberate mischief.

The area has since been deemed safe.
