The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate following an incident in the city’s east end Tuesday night.
Emergency crews were called to the scene in the area of Pape Avenue and O’Connor Drive around 10 p.m.
It’s alleged that a man stole a taxicab and then crashed into another vehicle. He then fled the cab and barricaded himself into a nearby home.
The homeowner told CityNews the man loudly banged on his front door and he opened it – worried someone had been injured in the crash and needed help. He said the man at the door then forced his way into the home, told the homeowner to leave and then threatened to light parts of the house on fire.
The homeowner said the man then went into a bedroom, lit the bed on fire and barricaded himself inside — at which point the homeowner fled and called police.
According to the SIU, officers attempted to negotiate with the man. The Emergency Task Force was called in and officers forced their way into the bedroom and found the man with injuries.
He was eventually taken out of the home on a stretcher and rushed to a local hospital where he remains in intensive care.
