The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to investigate after one person was killed in a two-vehicle collision in Scarborough on Saturday.

The SIU says police were investigating a car in a plaza parking lot around 7 p.m. when the vehicle fled the scene.

As police pursued the vehicle, it struck another car at the intersection of Scarborough Golf Club Road and Lawrence Avenue East.

A 77-year-old driver in the vehicle that was struck was pronounced dead at the scene while a 74-year-old female passenger was taken to hospital in serious condition.

No one in the car that was being pursued by police sustained serious injury.

The SIU is an arms-length agency of the provincial government which investigates incidents involving police officers where there has been a serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
