Man found sleeping behind wheel charged with impaired driving

A 19-year-old King Township man is facing impaired driving charges after he was found passed out behind the wheel of his car.

York Regional Police say 9-1-1 received a call from a citizen indicating he had come up to a vehicle stopped at the intersection of 7th Concession and Lloydtown-Aurora Road around 6 a.m. on July 7.

Police say the intersection is controlled by a stop sign but the driver of the vehicle in question wasn’t moving.

The citizen called police after getting out of his car and noticing that the driver appeared to be asleep behind the wheel. In audio released by police, the expressed his concern about trying to wake up the driver, fearing that he may step on the gas pedal and “fly out into the intersection.”

“I was going to try to wake him up but I don’t know if the car is in gear. I don’t want him to run me over or anything,” the unidentified caller is heard telling the 9-1-1 operator.

Police arrived on the scene and boxed the car in before attempting to wake the driver.

Upon speaking with the man and noticing an open bottle of alcohol and cannabis in the vehicle, he was placed under arrest and charged with impaired driving, driving a motor vehicle with cannabis readily available and driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor.
