‘Titans’ crew member dies after being struck by metal in Etobicoke

A special effects coordinator has died after an industrial accident in Etobicoke on Thursday.

Police and emergency crews were called to a facility in the area of North Queen Street and Shorncliffe Road around 11:30 a.m.

Toronto police constable David Hopkinson tells 680 NEWS it appears a piece of equipment burst, and a shard of metal struck the victim. He suffered very serious injuries and died as paramedics were taking him to hospital via emergency run.

Warner Bros. confirms the victim was a crew member on the superhero TV show “Titans” and the incident occured at a special effects shop during a test.

In a statement, “Titans” executive producers, Warner bros. Television Group and DV Universe identified the man as Warren Appleby, who had a 25-year career working in TV and movies.

“We are heartbroken and devastated by the passing of our treasured colleague, special effects coordinator Warren Appleby, after an accident which occurred at a special effects facility during the preparation and testing for an upcoming shoot.” they said. “The executive producers, along with everyone in the TITANS family, Warner Bros. Television Group and DC UNIVERSE, wish to express our deepest condolences, and heartfelt love and support, to Warren’s family and friends at this most difficult time.”

The show’s production has been shut down for two days.

The ministry of labour is investigating.
