1 person critically injured in Hwy. 401 crash at Port Union

By News Staff

Ontario Provincial Police say one person was critically injured in a crash on Highway 401 at Port Union on Sunday morning.

Crews responded to the scene for a vehicle on fire around 8 a.m.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says a vehicle struck a bus and the crash appears to be “high speed in nature.”

One person from the vehicle was airlifted to a trauma centre in critical condition. There were no reports of any injuries on the bus.

While first responders were attending to the victim, fire fighters at the scene were nearly struck after an alleged impaired driver drove through the closure, Sgt. Kerry Schmidt posted on Twitter. The driver was tasered and taken into custody.

A traffic reconstruction team is on scene and major traffic delays are expected in the area.

The westbound Highway 401 express lanes are blocked at this time and traffic is being diverted to the collector lanes before Whites Road.

A witness on scene told CityNews he had been caught in the traffic backlog for close to two hours.
