Jamie Cullum continues to push his musical boundaries

By Lindsay Dunn

Jamie Cullum has been selling out his shows in Toronto for years and has loyal fans in every corner of the world.

Those loyal fans had to wait five years for the British singer/songwriter to release his new album “Taller.”

“It was an interesting five years since I made the last record,” Cullum told CityNews. “I think when I finally came to making this record, I tried to capitalize on the need and ability and desire to be more honest in the lyrics.”

The album is unlike anything fans have heard from the singer before. He wrote every song on the album and no subject was off limits.

“I was speaking to my wife about this the other day because you do put something out that’s a lot more vulnerable and you feel so nervous about it because you feel a bit exposed. My wife was even saying how some of this is about us and our life and you kind of have to let it go.”

“I poured over every line really and I’ve never actually written lyrics before the melody before this album,” said Cullum. “The reaction to it has been like unlike anything for me in the eight or night albums I have put out. I’m so touched by it. When you put yourself out there you don’t know what to expect.”

The British singer has sold over 10 million album sales to date and with a successful BBC Radio 2 Radio show, his passion continues to grow.

“I grew up a fan of music, I didn’t grow up wanting to be a singer with a hairbrush in my hand acting like it was a microphone wanting to be on stage. I just loved music and I got involved because I loved it and still do.”
