The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a man was shot by police in Vaughan after the alleged stolen vehicle he was driving crashed into another car while he was fleeing police.

The SIU said around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, York regional police spotted a vehicle they believed was stolen heading west on Steeles Avenue West, east of Islington Avenue, and tried to stop it.

The vehicle then crashed into another vehicle.

The SIU said there was a confrontation between officers and the male driver of the suspected stolen vehicle, at which point an officer shot the man. He remains in serious condition in hospital. York police said officers were also involved in a confrontation with other people in the car.

A female occupant in that vehicle was taken to hospital as a precaution.

An York police officer was also taken to hospital as a precaution but has since been released.

Toronto police say they are assisting York police as the incident occurred on the border of the two jurisdictions.
