The owners of a Richmond Hill restaurant were shocked find an unusual discovery in their very own backyard that led to a police investigation.
Aubtin Golizadeh, whose family owns Yummies on Yonge Street, just south of Major Mackenzie Drive, told CityNews he found the hand grenade with the pin still intact while cleaning the area behind the eatery.
“We’ve walked along this area multiple times,” Golizadeh said. “When I was raking it, I’m hitting a metal object that’s an explosive device with another metal object, so it got me really scared.”
The family-owned restaurant was full of patrons at the time of the discovery and Golizadeh said he immediately contacted York Regional Police.
Officers arrived within minutes and evacuated the eatery.
Police tell CityNews they responded to the call along with their explosive disposal unit, who later determined the grenade was not active, and deemed the area safe around 9 p.m.
It’s unknown at this point how the device got there or how long it’s been sitting in the back of the restaurant.
York police have taken possession of the item, and will be disposing it safely.
