A 33-year-old Toronto man has been identified as the latest homicide victim after being shot while driving in the area of Weston Road and Jane Street.

Police were called to the scene just after 9 p.m. Wednesday to reports of a shot fired near Sidney Belsey Crescent.

The man was driving along Weston in a white Jeep Grand Cherokee with an Alberta licence plate when another vehicle drove up next to him and began shooting.

The victim was struck by at least one bullet and crashed into a tree nearby. The suspect vehicle then fled the scene eastbound on Weston towards Jane.

The victim was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died. He has been identified as Abdikani Ismail.

Det. Sgt. Brandon Price said on Thursday that police believe this was a targeted shooting and not a random act but he could not comment on whether or not this was a gang-related incident.

Price would also not confirm on how many suspects police are searching for and while they do have a vehicle description, police are seeking more witnesses to corroborate that information before releasing it to the public.

This is the city’s 40th homicide of the year.
