Taylor Swift is on top of the music charts again, this time with her seventh studio album Lover, but this album has a special Toronto connection.
One of the songs on the album — “It’s Nice to Have a Friend” — features students from Toronto’s Regent Park School of Music.
“Words can’t describe how thrilled we are to hear our students on Taylor Swift’s new album,” said Richard Marsella, executive director of the music school.
“This exposure is raising awareness and much-needed funds for the Regent Park School of Music. The royalties we receive from the use of our composition in the song will help fund musical education, and for that we are truly grateful.”
The song Swift samples is off of an album called Parkscapes, which was produced by Grammy award-winning Toronto producer Frank Dukes who played the song for Swift.
Take a listen to the students featured on the song:
“The album is comprised of a series of sparse, melancholic compositions that are ripe for use by contemporary music producers and artists,” said Dukes. “It’s incredible to hear the one of world’s most popular artists using the RPSM (Regent Park School of Music) students’ music as a part of her own song.”
The chance to have their voices featured on one of the biggest pop-stars in the world albums is a one-in-a-million chance.
“It was great to experience what it’s like to be in a real music studio environment,” added Mwinyi, who was one of the students featured on the song. “And it’s amazing to see the very different approach Taylor Swift took to the composition that we made”
Swift also made a “generous” donation towards the school.
