Dior’s ‘Sauvage’ campaign pulled from Twitter and Instagram amid online backlash

EDMONTON (CityNews) – Dior, the French luxury fashion company has taken down videos for its latest cologne ‘Sauvage’ from both Twitter and Instagram.

However, as of 2:55 MT Friday, a YouTube video from the Christian Dior account of the campaign was still available for viewing.

The company was being accused of racism for its depiction of Native American culture.

The spot, which appeared on Twitter Friday morning, features an unidentified Indigenous man dancing in traditional dress and a voice-over by Johnny Depp.

The tweet proclaims that the ad campaign is “An authentic journey deep into the Native American soul in a sacred, founding and secular territory,” with  “More to come. September 1st.”

Sauvage in French has a variety of meanings, including wild, unspoiled and savage.

Critics also decried the involvement of Johnny Depp, who is the celebrity face of the fragrance and stars in a film promoting Sauvage.

The teaser video prompted many Twitter users to call the video racist and cultural appropriation.

City News has reached out to Dior for comment, but have not heard back.
