Belarusian leader reinstates teacher fired over rage video

MINSK, Belarus — Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has ordered the reinstatement of an elementary school teacher fired over a video that allegedly showed her threatening a 10-year-old student with violence.

In footage shot on a mobile phone by 4th grade students in the city of Gomel, teacher Lyudmila Chetvertkova was seen holding a desk above the boy’s head and verbally abusing him.

The teacher was dismissed after the video was published last week. Chetvertkova said her outburst was sparked after she was hit in the back by a paper cup apparently thrown by a student.

Lukashenko ordered Chetvertkova’s reinstatement late Thursday, although he added that he would have managed the situation differently had he been the teacher.

He also ordered that mobile phones be prohibited in classrooms.
