A male, believed to be a student at Oakwood Collegiate Institute has been injured after a shooting in broad daylight near the school.

Police received multiple calls for the sound of gunshots in the area of St. Clair Avenue West and Oakwood Avenue at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Insp. Darrin Alldrit said two males were involved in an altercation with each other on the north side of St. Clair. Both males allegedly pulled out firearms and began shooting at each other.

Both fled the scene and the injured male ran back to Oakwood Collegiate Institute.

The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries with a gunshot wound to the stomach. Police are looking for a male in his teens, wearing black clothing. Officers say they do not believe it was a random attack.

A firearm was also located in the area.

Oakwood Collegiate Institute was in a hold and secure, but it has since been lifted.

TDSB spokeswoman Shari Shwartz-Maltz said it is her understanding that the victim was a student at the school.

“The only thing I want to say is that everyone was pretty scared inside, but what we feel good about is that he found a safe place to go.”

She says it was the vice-principal of Oakwood Collegiate that performed first aid on the victim and called police. “As horrible and scary as this is, these kids know that schools are always safe places and we have staff that are trained in first aid so thank god he came in and he had a safe place to go.”
