By News Staff

A Toronto police officer has been arrested and charged after an incident involving a suspect in October.

On Oct. 7, 2019, the officer and his partner were called to a break and enter call in the Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue West area.

When officers arrived at the scene, they were told the suspects had taken off in a rideshare car.

The two officers tracked down the rideshare vehicle and attempted to stop the car. The three suspects fled the scene on foot, but one of the suspects surrendered to the officers after a brief chase.

The suspect was in the process of being handcuffed when the officer allegedly used his Taser on the suspect three times, police said.

It is also alleged he kicked the suspect, police said.

Constable Mehrdad Mahmodian, 51, has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault and attempt to obstruct justice.

Mahmodian has worked for the police service for 11 years is currently suspended with pay.

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has not been called in to investigate the case because it did not meet the agency’s criteria, police said.

The SIU is an arms-length government agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

The nature of the suspect’s injuries have not been released.

Mahmodian is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 4, 2020.

Editor’s note: this story has been updated to clarify when the Taser was allegedly deployed on the suspect by the police officer.
