SIU probe fatal crash in Markham, man arrested for impaired driving

By News Staff

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a fatal two-vehicle crash in Markham on Tuesday night.

The SIU said around 7:15 p.m. on New Year’s Eve an officer with York Regional Police was driving along Major Mackenzie Drive East in the area of Kennedy Road when a Hyundai Veloster drove past her.

The officer followed the vehicle, which then got into a collision with a Toyota Corolla in the area of Elgin Mills Road and Ninth Line.

The driver of the Corolla, a 68-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Hyundai was not seriously injured. Police said he was arrested for allegedly driving impaired.

Police said the SIU has invoked their mandate “due to an interaction between York Regional Police and the suspect vehicle.”

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the police directly or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
