World’s largest duck floats back to Toronto for waterfront festival

The bright yellow duck that caught the eye of Torontonians in 2017 is set to float back to the city this summer.

The Redpath Waterfront Festival announced Monday the return of the six-storey-tall, 30,000-pound yellow duck, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the festival, which takes place June 19-21.

This massive sculpture by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman has been touring several waters of the world since 2007.

The cost of the installation will be funded by the festival’s operating budget this time around and not through government grants, which had upset some people in 2017.

The festival generated an estimated $7.6 million for the City of Toronto, according to Redpath.

“In a decade of programming [at] the Redpath Waterfront Festival there has been no single attraction outside of the Tall Ships that has generated more attention or generated such strong visitor numbers,” Kevin Currie, chair of the festival, said in a release.

Since its first appearance, the people of Toronto were awed by this endearing inflatable on the blue serene waters.

“In the years since, we have received countless comments and inquiries asking when the duck will return. With our 10th anniversary this year, it was obvious that we needed to bring the duck back to re-capture the magic and thank our visitors for their ongoing support of the festival,” Currie said.
