Oshawa man charged with assaulting police dog

Durham regional police have charged a 41-year-old Oshawa man after he allegedly choked a police dog with its own collar during an arrest on Monday night.
In a release police said they were called to a residence on Olive Avenue for a disturbance after a man was reportedly smashing windows and damaging furniture while apparently under the influence of drugs.
Officers attempted to arrest the man, but police say he tried to flee so they released the police service dog to prevent his escape.
“During the K-9 apprehension the subject attempted to choke the police canine using his collar during the violent struggle. Despite this the canine maintained control of the subject leading to the arrest of the accused,” Durham police said in a release.
The suspect was charged with mischief/damage property under $5000 and willfully cause pain, suffering or injury to an animal.
Police say the suspect suffered minor injuries and continued to act aggressively at hospital where he was given Narcan — a medication used to reverse the effects of opioids.
He was later released from custody.
Police say the dog, named Rogue, suffered minor injuries.
