A 37-year-old man is facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with an apartment fire in Scarborough last week.

Around 3 a.m. on Jan. 13, fire crews were called to a highrise on Bay Mills Boulevard near Warden and Sheppard Avenues.

Firefighters pulled a woman from the burning 18th-floor apartment with life-threatening injuries but she later died in hospital.

Police have since identified her as 49-year-old Maryna Kudzianiuk.

Police arrested Ricardo Miraballes on Saturday. He is expected to appear in court early next week.

This was the city’s third homicide of the year.
