Police say a 28-year-old man was shot dead in an “ambush-type of shooting” in Scarborough on Saturday night.
Officers were called to a restaurant on Kingston Road just west of Markham Road around 9 p.m. following multiple reports of shots fired.
Homicide detective Rob Choe says two male suspects, armed with handguns, approached the front of the establishment and opened fire at the front of the door and window before fleeing on foot and getting into a silver coloured car.
Choe says Stephon Kelly was struck and killed by a gunshot wound to the chest.
A man in his 50s, who was grazed in the head by a bullet, and a female in her 40s, who was struck in the hand by a gunshot, were both taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They have since been treated and released.
Choe says they believe Kelly was the intended target of what they’re calling a “gang-related event,” however, he would not say if Kelly had gang affiliations or if he was known to police.
As for the other two individuals, Choe says there is nothing at this time which shows any connection to Kelly, adding it looks like they were innocent bystanders in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Police have yet to release any suspect descriptions and are asking anyone with information or video who may have been in the area at the time of the shooting to contact them.
