A man, believed to be in his 30s, is in hospital after he was hit by a tanker truck in the city’s northwest end.

Emergency crews were called to Sheppard Avenue at Allen Road around 4:45 a.m. Friday.

Toronto police Sgt. Murray Campbell with Traffic Services said the man, who appeared to be intoxicated at the time, had an interaction with the driver of the tanker truck. The pedestrian then jumped on and off the truck and walked away.

He said the driver tried to turn right from Sheppard onto the Allen when the man suddenly jumped into the way of the truck and was hit.

The man was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police later said the man’s injuries are “major” but not life-threatening.

The driver remained at the scene.

Police have closed the intersection while they continue to investigate.
