Man, 30, charged in hammer murder of 64-year-old Scarborough woman

A man is facing a first-degree murder charge after turning himself into police in connection with the city’s latest homicide.

Police say a woman was walking eastbound along Sheppard Avenue East near Markham Road when she was attacked by a man with a hammer around 7:15 p.m. Friday night.

When police arrived, the victim was pronounced dead on the scene. She has been identified as 64-year-old Hang-Kam Annie Chiu of Scarborough.

Police had initially indicated that the victim had suffered a gunshot wound.

A 30-year-old man turned himself in to police at 42 Division. Saad Akhtar of Scarborough has been charged with first-degree murder.

Police did not say if there is any relationship between the accused and the victim.

This is the 11th homicide in the city in 2020.
