One of the oldest women in Canada dies of coronavirus at downtown long-term care home

A woman who was believed to be one of Canada’s oldest is among 26 residents who have died from COVID-19 at a long-term care home in downtown Toronto.

Mon Sheong Homes for the Aged, near University and Dundas Streets, is one of the several retirement homes that has been ravaged by a covid-19 outbreak.

The granddaughter of one of the victims told 680 News her grandmother, Foon Hay Lum, was 111 years old when she died, making her one of the oldest women registered in Canada.

A total of 50 people have tested positive for COVID-19 and another 16 staff members have contracted the virus as well.

In a statement released earlier this week, the long-term care home said they are in dire need of personal protective equipment.

There are currently 162 outbreaks at long-term care homes in Ontario with 625 deaths reported among residents. A total of 2455 residents and 1120 staff members have tested positive for COVID-19.
