Ontario reports fewer than 300 new COVID-19 cases, first time in 6 weeks

By News Staff

Ontario reported 294 new cases of novel coronavirus on Sunday as the total number of people infected across the province surpassed 20,000.

It’s the first time since March 31 that there were fewer than 300 new cases reported, providing further hope that physical distancing and stay-at-home measures are having an effect against the spread of the virus.

The weekly average of new cases sits at 383, which is approximately 131 fewer cases reported over the previous seven days.

The provincial total of confirmed cases now stands at 20,238 with 73 per cent of those considered resolved.

Another 35 more people have died, bringing the provincial total to 1,634. Of that total, 788 were in long-term care – an increase of 13 over the previous day.

The number of people in hospital decreased by 55 to 961 patients. Those patients in the ICU also fell to under 200 and the number of patients on ventilators also fell by 18. However, it’s uncertain if the decrease is due to patients recovering and leaving hospital or if they have succumbed to the disease.

Health officials say they completed over 17,000 tests in the last 24 hour period, that is down from the high of more than 19,000 completed tests reported Saturday.

Canadian health officials also reported one of the lowest daily increases in the number of deaths due to COVID-19 across the country.

Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, said the total number of deaths rose by just over 2 per cent to more than 4,700. A total of more than 68,000 Canadians have now tested positive for COVID-19

“We have come a long way in a short time since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared and our efforts have undoubtedly prevented wider spread of the virus across the country. Remember to stay home if you are sick and wash your hands frequently,” she said in a statement, repeating an often familiar phrase since the pandemic began.
