A 37-year-old mother and her three young daughters have been killed following a multi-vehicle crash in north Brampton.

The Special Investigations Unit says a Peel regional police cruiser was travelling westbound on Countryside Drive when they observed an Infinity heading eastbound. Shortly after, the Infiniti was involved in a crash with a van at the intersection of Torbram Road and Countryside. The van had been traveling northbound on Torbram. The van also struck a light pole after the initial crash.

The mother and her three daughters, aged one, four and six years old, were in the van.

Two other vehicles sustained damage in the crash that occurred around 12:15 p.m.

The six-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two girls and their mother were transported to hospital where they later died of their injuries.

The four victims have not been identified, but they were from the Caledon area.

The driver of the Infiniti, a 20-year-old man, is in critical condition in hospital.

No other serious injuries were reported.

SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon did not provided any more details regarding what occurred just prior to the crash, saying “It’s too early in the investigation.”

“This is a devastating, devastating incident … it’s shocking,” said a visibly shaken Peel Const. Akil Mooken. “As a parent, when I first saw this call come across, the first thing I could think of was my own daughter and trying to imagine the pain that family was going to be facing.”

Mooken said no arrests have been made at this point but the investigation is ongoing.

Police would not confirm eyewitness reports that one of the vehicles was speeding through a red light at the time of the crash.

“It’s unknown at this time if speed was a factor. We’ll consider all factors in this investigation,” said Mooken.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown tweeted later in the evening, calling the crash a “reckless driving incident.”

His tweet read, “There are no words that describe the pain and sorrow that Brampton is enduring with the needless death of a loving mother and three young children. I am infuriated that a reckless driving incident would rob this family of their future.”

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

EDITOR’S NOTE: An earlier version of this story originally stated that three children had died in the crash, but police updated to say that only two children had died. They confirmed the third child’s death later in the afternoon.
