Toronto Police Services Board announces interim chief

By News Staff

The Toronto Police Services Board has announced that Deputy Chief James Ramer will serve as interim chief when Chief Mark Saunders steps down on July 31.

Ramer will take over on August 1 and will remain in the seat until a new Chief of Police is appointed by the board.

Saunders officially announced his resignation on June 8 — eight months before his contract was set to expire.

In his announcement Saunders said he looks forward to being a full-time dad and husband “that’s not an exhausted by-product that walks through the door at the end of the day.”

Saunders had a kidney transplant in 2017 but said his health was not a factor in the decision.

When asked what he will be doing next, he alluded to working “for free” and as a “free agent” working somewhere in the city.
