A cyclist is dead after being hit by a tractor-trailer overnight in Mississauga.
Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Hurontario and Dundas streets just before midnight on Wednesday.
Police say the 55-year-old cyclist was biking with a friend when he was struck by a tractor trailer.
The cyclist suffered critical injuries and was rushed to hospital where he later died.
The truck fled the scene and police say it’s possible the driver doesn’t know the vehicle struck someone.
Both the driver and the vehicle were located several hours later.
The intersection was closed down for several hours while police investigated, but has since reopened.
Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said traffic safety remains a foremost concern for both the police organization and community members.
He appealed to anybody in the area that may have dashcam or surveillance footage that could help with the investigation.
Chief Duraiappah also highlighted that there have already been 20 traffic fatalities in 2020 so far, compared to 23 in all of 2019.
“This is a concerning factor for us. We know that speed is a contributing cause for most of our fatalities. We implore the public to make sure that they drive safely,” said Duraiappah.
