Girl, 17, dies after shooting in Hamilton

A teenage girl has died after a shooting Wednesday morning in downtown Hamilton.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on St. Matthews Avenue, in the Wentworth Street North and Barton Street East area around 4 a.m.

The 17-year-old girl was found in life-threatening condition, suffering from a gunshot wound.

She was rushed to hospital where she later died of her injuries.

Hamilton police say there were about five people in the home at the time of the shooting and are still looking to speak with witnesses.

Two males were seen fleeing the scene around the time of the shooting.

Their exact ages are not known but police say it’s believed they are in their early 20s.

Police say one of the males may have a short brown buzz cut, while the other has long brown hair. They exited the rear of the home and fled down an alleyway in an unknown direction.

The weapon has not been found. Police are asking residents to search their property in case the weapon was thrown away or hidden.

As well, officers will be going door-to-door in the area to find any witnesses and possibly collect security footage of the area.

So far police have not uncovered a motive for the shooting.

The victim’s identity is not being released at this time.
