The Special Investigations Unit says the field work for their investigation into the fatal shooting of Jamal Francique by Peel police is complete.

Francique, 28, was shot and killed by a Peel police officer in January.

Peel police have previously said plain clothes officers from the street crime unit were investigating a vehicle for drug activity in a townhouse complex in the area of Winston Churchill Boulevard and Eglinton Avenue West on Jan 7.

When officers approached the vehicle was driven towards the officers. One of the officers then fired several shots at the vehicle.

Francique was struck and taken to hospital. He died of his injuries on Jan. 10.

The police watchdog says they have conducted interviews with the subject officer and eight witness officers from Peel police. One other civilian witness was interviewed.

No video footage has been recovered.

The SIU says they are still waiting on the results of a post-mortem that was conducted on Jan. 11 as well as a toxicology analysis.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
