ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — Newfoundland and Labrador’s next premier will be announced later today during a provincial Liberal Party leadership convention.

Over 34,000 eligible voters will decide who will replace Premier Dwight Ball, who is stepping down.

Physician and charity founder Andrew Furey and former civil servant John Abbott are vying for the post.

Voters began casting their ballots last week online and by telephone for the next party leader.

The winner will take the stage this evening at the St. John’s Convention Centre.

Only 50 people will be allowed inside due to restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
