Two people are dead and a third person is in critical condition following a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Mississauga.

Provincial police say a Ford F-150 pickup and a Lexus SUV were travelling westbound when they collided with each other just before 9 a.m. Saturday. The impact of the crash sent the Ford over the centre median into eastbound traffic where it hit an oncoming Dodge Caravan.

Police say several other vehicles were also involved, striking debris from the initial crash.

Peel paramedics say two people were pronounced dead at the scene while a third person was taken to a trauma centre in critical condition.

Police later confirmed a 62-year-old man and a 35-year-old female were killed in the crash while a 38-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Initially, police said the third man had died but later updated that statement to say he is in critical but stable condition.

The deceased victims have been identified as Changding Zou, 62 of Markham and Ting Zou, 35 of Scarborough.

A fourth man, who was in the Caravan, was taken to a local hospital with what was described as ‘moderate’ injuries while another individual was treated on scene and not transported.

Both east and westbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed from Mississauga Road to Highway 407 as part of the investigation.

Police said some lanes of the highway on both sides will likely be closed for at least the next 24 hours due to repairs that need to be made to the centre median which was damaged in the crash.
