Ontario reports 1,723 new cases of COVID-19, 35 new deaths Wednesday

Ontario is reporting 1,723 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, a slight increase from 1,707 cases the day before.

There are also 35 additional deaths, equaling one of the highest totals recorded just last week. That pushes the provincial total up to 3,698.

Peel Region saw a sharp increase with 500 new infections, followed by the City of Toronto with 410 – a significant decline from the previous day. York Region reported a moderate increase of 196 new cases.

The province says it conducted 44,226 tests in the previous 24-hour period.

In total, 656 people are hospitalized in Ontario due to COVID-19, including 183 in intensive care.

The province is also reporting that 106 people are on ventilators in hospital.

The latest figures bring the total of COVID-19 cases in Ontario to 119,922 with 101,698 cases resolved.

In the province’s long-term care homes, 664 residents currently have COVID-19 and 22 new deaths have been reported today.

The province says 111 of its 626 long-term care homes are experiencing an outbreak.

It also reported 166 new COVID-19 cases related to schools, including at least 140 among students.
