Quebec and Ontario report dozens of new COVID-19 deaths as high case counts continue

By The Canadian Press

Quebec is reporting a new single-day high of COVID-19 infections as deaths continue to soar in Canada’s two most populous provinces.

Quebec reported a record 1,514 infections today as well as 43 new deaths linked to the novel coronavirus.

The province’s deputy premier announced strict new limits for the number of shoppers inside shopping malls and big box stores this morning, with a maximum capacity to be determined based on each store’s surface area.

Cases and deaths were also high in Ontario, which reported 1,723 new infections and 35 lives lost to the virus.

Worsening numbers across the country have increased pressure on the federal government to give answers on how soon Canada will begin receiving doses of the most promising vaccines once they’re approved by Health Canada.

The United Kingdom today became the first country to authorize the COVID-19 vaccine made by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech, and has promised to begin inoculating its citizens in the coming days.
