A woman is dead after she was struck by an impaired driver in Oakville on Thursday afternoon.

Police were called to the area of Lakeshore Road East and Burgundy Drive shortly after 2p.m. after getting reports that a pedestrian had been seriously injured.

Upon arrival of emergency services, a 51-year-old woman and her dog were pronounced dead.

The driver, a 58-year-old man from Oakville, has been arrested for Impaired Operation Cause Death and Dangerous Driving Cause Death.

Halton Police say the involved vehicle was traveling eastbound on Lakeshore when it left the roadway to the south side.  The vehicle continued to travel eastbound, off the roadway, where it struck the woman and her dog, who were walking along a path.

The vehicle was then redirected onto the roadway after it struck a stone post.

Lakeshore Road has been closed from Bel Air Drive to Chartwell Road as the investigation continues.

Due to the nature of the incident the Collision Reconstruction Unit has resumed responsibility of the investigation. Anyone with additional information is being asked to contact police.
