Canada-U.S. land border to remain closed to non-essential travel until Feb. 21

By The Canadian Press

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the Canada-U.S. land border will remain closed to non-essential travel until at least Feb. 21.

The restrictions have been in place since mid-March last year.

Visits such as vacations, day trips and cross-border shopping excursions have been forbidden in an effort to limit the spread of the virus.

The travel ban does not apply to those who must cross to ensure the continued flow of goods and essential services, including truckers and hospital staff.

In December, Trudeau said he won’t give in to pressure to re-open the border.

Ottawa has indicated the closure will likely be extended as long as COVID-19 cases continue to climb south of the border.
