A man is in custody following a nine-hour standoff outside a West Oakville home, Halton police said Friday evening.

Police said they were called to a residence on Lakeshore Road West between 4th Line and Birch Hill at around 1:25 p.m. Friday for a report of gunfire in the area.

Residents in the area were asked to shelter in place, police said. Appleby College, which is nearby, was placed in a hold and secure mode.

Tactical officers, along with crisis negotiators were sent to the scene and officers safely removed a woman from the residence, investigators said.

Officers continued to speak to a person inside the home until around 10:30 p.m. when officers found a man on the upper level of the home and arrested him.

He has minor injuries, police said.

The natural gas supply, along with the electricity on the street was shut off for safety reasons for a few hours because officers smelled gas.

Investigators said a man and a woman lived in the home in question. No other details about these two individuals have been released by the police.

“We know it has been a long and stressful day for area neighbours, and we can’t thank you enough for your support and patience,” police said in a tweet late Friday evening.

Displaced residents have now returned to their homes and police said they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
