Ontario’s new COVID-19 cases below 2,000 amid technical glitch in Toronto

By News staff

Ontario is reporting 1,913 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, a drop from 2,578 cases the day before.

However, the Ministry of Health notes that Toronto Public Health is likely under-reporting cases Tuesday due to a technical glitch.

The last time cases dipped below 2,000 was on Dec. 28 when 1,939 cases were reported.

Despite the glitch, Toronto still leads the way with 550 new cases, followed by 346 in Peel Region and 235 in York Region.

The province says 46 more people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total to 5,479. A majority of the deaths (3,232) have been in long-term care homes.

Health officials say 1,626 people have been hospitalized, with 400 in ICU and 292 on a ventilator.

The province said more than 34,500 tests were completed in the previous day, which well below its goal of 50,000 per day.

As of Tuesday evening, 9,691 doses of the vaccine were administered and 209,788 doses have been administered overall.
